Long-term health impairments can lead to difficulties in organizing your studies or taking examinations during your studies. In these cases, students with disabilities can apply for compensation for disadvantages. This enables them to participate in their studies and examinations with equal opportunities. Compensation for disadvantages does not constitute preferential treatment, but should lead to equal opportunities.

Please always use your student e-mail address and your matriculation number to communicate with the Office for Study Affairs.

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING FOR COMPENSATION FOR DISADVANTAGES

Compensation for disadvantages can be applied for if the following three conditions are met:

  1. There is a long-term health impairment.
  2. This impairment leads to a disadvantage in study and/or examination performance.
  3. The disadvantage must not be related to the competencies to be tested.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

In order to claim compensation for disadvantages in examinations and/or for the organization of your studies, you must submit a written application to your respective examination board. In it, you must describe the effects of your impairment on examinations or the implementation/organization of your studies, without necessarily stating the diagnosis. You must also submit a proposal as to how a suitable compensation for disadvantages could look for you.

Further information on compensation for disadvantages

Together with your application, submit a specialist medical certificate or a psychotherapeutic statement. The following points must be included:

  • expected duration of the illness
  • Symptoms of the illness/medical findings
  • Concrete consequences of the impairment for studies or examinations
  • Recommendation of specific measures to compensate for disadvantages and their scope
  • Date, stamp, signature of the doctor/psychotherapist/psychotherapist

The specialist medical certificate or psychotherapeutic statement is essential for the examination board's decision. It is not necessary to state the diagnosis. Rather, the symptoms of the illness and the effects on performance should be described in detail. It must be clear to laypersons what specific consequences your health impairment has for your studies or examinations.

In principle, there is no right to a specific compensation for disadvantages. Each case is examined and assessed individually. For examples of possible measures to compensate for disadvantages, please visit our German website or contact Ms. Wohlfarth for assistance.

Are you studying several subjects at the same time, for example in a teaching degree program or a double degree program? Please note that you may have to apply to different examination boards for compensation for disadvantages, depending on the subject for which you are applying.

Subjects that are offered by other faculties but are part of your core subject are not affected.
