Development of evolutionary biology concepts at the transition from primary to secondary education

The main objective of my study is to introduce core concepts of evolution such as variation and natural selection in primary school already, so that the students achieve an appropriate basic understanding of evolution theory and are empowered to explain adaptation phenomena in a scientific way. Our aim, in bigger picture, is also to thereby enhance curricular connectivity and cumulative learning between primary school with its comprehensive, non-disciplinary approach to natural phenomena on the one hand, and the early biology lessons in secondary school on the other. Our field study is designed as a quasi-experimental long-term intervention study from third grade in primary school to fifth grade in secondary school. In all three sample groups, the intervention is embedded in a sequence of pre-, post- and follow-up-tests.

  • SPS II/III

The module consists of a school placement lasting several weeks and a preparatory seminar. As part of the module, I accompany the students to the schools and help them with the preparation and follow-up of the lessons. With the help of the accompanying seminar, the students acquire/deepen knowledge about planning, implementing and reflecting on biology lessons.

  • Sach 04 Seminar

Development, testing and evaluation of teaching units in the context of evolutionary biology concepts as well as the survey of students conceptions in pre-post design. Current issues in the didactics of subject matter teaching; perspective-related or cross-perspective project/research project in subject matter teaching; reflection on projects and/or on research projects; design and/or evaluation of learning environments for individual and social learning processes in subject matter teaching.

  • Sac01 Seminar

Children's factual learning from anthropological, developmental, socio-cultural and learning theory perspectives; perspective-related and cross-perspective ways of thinking, working and acting; selected contents and educational goals of the natural science, technical and spatial perspectives of factual education.
