General information

The outpatient clinic for children and adolescents, located at the Institute for Psychology, University of Leipzig, holds the authorization for outpatient psychotherapeutic treatments that comply with the required duration necessary for research and teaching.

Statutory and private health insurances usually bear the expenses for the treatment.

In our outpatient clinic for children and adolescents, diagnosis and therapy are closely linked to research on the genesis, developmental course, and treatment of mental disorders. Therefore, our diagnostic methods and treatments are always in line with newest scientific findings.

Our research focuses on causal and maintaining factors in childhood mental disorders, especially anxiety disorders. Therefore, we can offer special expertise in diagnosis and treatment for patients suffering from anxiety disorders.

Here you can find the outpatient clinic for clinical psychology and psychotherapy in adults.

Which problems may lead you to our outpatient clinic?

Our therapeutic program addresses children and adolescents with the following problems:

  • Anxiety (e.g. separation anxiety, social anxiety, school anxiety, panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorders)
  • Depression
  • Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADD and ADHD)
  • School problems (partial performance disorders in school)
  • Eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia)
  • Enuresis and enkopresis after the age of 5
  • Regulation disorders in infants (excessive crying, sleeping- and feeding disorders)
  • Compulsions
  • Tics
  • Oppositional defiant behaviour
  • Adjustment disorders as a reaction to difficult life events
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Emotional stress due to parental divorce
  • Sleeping disorders (difficulties to fall asleep and to sleep through the night)

It is not possible to offer an outpatient treatment for patients with acute suicidality or addiction disorders.

The way to psychotherapy

If you are interested in a therapeutic treatment in our outpatient clinic, please first contact us via telephone during our office hours. We will respond to your request as soon as possible and discuss further steps with you.

If parents share the custody for their child, both parents are required to give their agreement for their child’s treatment. Especially in case of divorce or separated living conditions, the double agreement is indispensable.

Adolescents older than 15 years are allowed to register independently at our outpatient clinic.

For your first appointment please bring with you:

In a first appointment in our outpatient clinic, we would like to get an impression of current problems, evaluate the need for a treatment, and illustrate possible treatments.

In subsequent probatory (preparatory) sessions with you and your child, we will engage in further diagnostics and information acquisition. Therapeutic conversations, observations, games, diagnostic interviews, and questionnaire help us to plan further steps. If psychotherapy is indicated, we will file an application to your health insurance. Statutory and private health insurances usually bear the expenses for the treatment.

Therapeutic sessions usually take place once a week on the premises of our outpatient clinic. One session lasts 50 minutes. Inclusion of parents/teachers as well as educational counselling constitutes an important part of psychotherapy with children.

In order to assure the quality of our therapeutic treatments, we constantly evaluate therapeutic progress and results via questionnaires, interviews and tests.

All of our employees are subject to medical confidentiality.
