Welcome to the website of the research group biology education of the Universität Leipzig. We would like to invite you to explore our homepage for information about our team and the ongoing research projects.
One major aim of our research group is the pre-service teacher training which enables the students to acquire a degree in teaching biology at different school levels. Apart from that different research projects based on qualitative methods are conducted by our staff and in cooperation with different research facilities all over Germany.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our staff.

UNLEASH 2018 in Singapore - worldwide innovation lab

At a recent event in Singapore, 1000 talented young academics developed solutions for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). UNLEASH is a global innovation lab bringing together young talents from over 100 countries. From ay 30th until June 6th 2018, they worked together with experts to develop innovative solutions to support the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Nominated by the Joachim Herz Stiftung, Judith Wiegelmann is currently in Singapore, developing solution strategies within the framework of the SDG 12 "Responsible Supply Chain and Production". Her team consists of 4 other members (from Singapore, USA and India). The goal of the team is to reduce the use of cash receipts, for example, when buying coffee from popular brands (such as Starbucks). After 5 days of exploring innovative possibilities, the team presented their proposed solutions in front of a panel of experts, investors and sponsors.

Thoughtfulness in Biology Education

How can teachers and researchers in science education promote a different teaching culture in science, and especially biology, beyond the short-sighted focus of “teaching-to-the-test”? During May 29th-31st ,2017, a group of teachers, researchers in science education, and interested students met for a seminar at the UCL Institute of Education in London. The project titled "Thoughtfulness in Biology Education" was organized by Ralph Levinson (Reader in Education). The Biology Education research group at University of Leipzig (Prof. Jörg Zabel and Alexander Bergmann) is part of the project team and is preparing the next meeting for October 2017 in Leipzig. EvoKE Conference explores diversity and innovation in European evolution education

EvoKE (Evolutionary Knowledge for Everyone) is a new network of evolution educators, researchers, and science communicators from across Europe working on interdisciplinary and collaborative educational development projects. Prof. Jörg Zabel and Dustin Eirdosh represented our working group. Prof. Zabel presented research on assessing evolution concepts during the poster session. Dustin Eirdosh led a workshop titled Extending evolution in the human domain, which explored the role of concepts in human evolution in the broader biology curriculum. The conference led to the development of an international network, EvoKids.org (based on the German EvoKids.de), for research and educational development for evolution science in primary and middle school classrooms, which Dustin continues to support through his coordination and thesis development work.

Conference about Innovation in science education at University of Modena 21. - 22. november 2014

The Primary Science Education at University of Modena - one of the oldest Universities in Italy - did every year a conference or workshop with contemporary innovations in science education in primary school and kindergarden at the crossroads of science and humanities. In november 2014 the conference explore the theme of stories and narration as a possibility to develop formal thoughts from natural language. In this case Prof. Dr. Jörg Zabel (university of Leipzig) speaks about "Stories and Meaning: What Students’ Narratives Reveal about their Understanding of Scientific Topics".
Due the same point of interests the Primary Science Education of university of Modena, Hans Fuchs (Zurich Univertity of Applied Sciences at Winterhur) and Prof. Jörg Zabel (University of Leipzig) decided to begin a collaboration. The first corporated project - a workshop about Narrative in Science - is 2015 from 6th - 9th of July in Switzerland.
